What is a sighting?
A sighting is a video or image that has not yet been vetted as a bona fide meme. If you are logged in, you can check out the latest sightings of memes.
Any member can make a sighting, but for it to exist for very long in Memecat the sighting needs to be vetted for suitability and classified according to what pattern it expresses.
Making a sighting in five steps:
1. Log In
We'd like people to get all due glory for sighting something cool. We'd also like to be able to harshly flog that vlogger who repeatedly submits 72-minutes of vapid drivel.
2. Find A Meme Out There
We accept the following methods of entertainment:
Videos:
Break.com
Google
Metacafe
Myspace
Yahoo
YouTube
Images:
Break.com
Flickr
Imageshack
Photobucket
Picasa
Zoomr
Go to one of these meme breeding grounds. If it is a video, copy the URL of the video display page. If it is an image, copy the URL of the .jpg or .png.
Here you will be asked to enter the following fields:
- Title
- URL
- Description
- Image
- Expresses (Pattern)
- Reflects (Culture)
- Contains (Device)
The page helps you figure out how to enter these fields.
Take note that the image is not required. If you're feeling especially helpful, take some time and get the best capture from the video that you are submitting.
4. Click on the Create Button
Memecat will help you out if something's not right with what you submitted.
5. Update Your Sighting
Once the sighting has been made, you will be presented with a page containing the video or image and other relevant information about this meme. At this point, you can modify your description, upload a better image, or enter additional information about this meme.
As with any other sighting in Memecat, you can specify the meme's suitability or classify the meme with additional patterns.
Help with the vetting:
If you encounter a meme that is not a meme or is clearly inappropriate, make sure to reject it. A meme is rejectable until it has been vetted by the community - just look right under the video or image display. Hopefully we won't find a reason to reject a meme that you sighted.
Some good reasons to reject:
- broken: the video does not play or the image is not found
- illegal: use your best judgement
- irrelevant: this meme is not homebrew or does not belong in Memecat
- notmeme: this video is simply not a meme
- spam: this video is an ad that does not even pretend to be a meme
